Abstract:
IL-17 is proinflammatory cytokine secreted by a unique CD4+ T (Th17) cell subset and proposed to play a role in host defense. We hypothesized that Th17 cells are lost in HIV-1 infection. HIV-1-infected children with plasma viremia below 50 copies/ml had IL-17 production, whereas those with detectable viremia had minimal secretion. These results imply viral-mediated destruction or impairment of Th17 cells and argue for complete suppression of viremia for reconstitution of Th17 cells.

Nepali victims slaughtered in Iraq finally get justice!

In August of 2004 a dozen Nepali labourers were slaughtered in Iraq by Iraqi insurgents. While the US contractors were trying to escape their responsibilities of compensating the families of the victims, a few good men…yeah like the movie…such as Attorney Matthew Handley…I heard he looks like Tom…fought for the victims’ families for four long years and recently justice has been served. The US Administrative Law Court for the Department of Labour recently declared that the victim’s families were entitled to death benefits and therefore, will recieve compensation of $223/month for each spouse and set of parents, with an additional $75/month for men who had children as long as they live. This compensation will not bring back their beloveds but it will help them raise their little ones hopefully with good education. Justice served!

  • Glow-in-the-Dark Shark Turned on by Hormones November 6, 2009
The safe answer to how a lantern shark turns its luminescence on and off is: “Any way it wants.” Now researchers have looked into the belly of the beast and found that three hormones act as on-off switches for these glow-in-the-dark sharks. It is the first discovery of hormones controlling bioluminescence in animals, the scientists [...]

  • Vet School 2.0: Stick Your Hand Up a Virtual Cow Butt November 6, 2009
There’s nothing tidy about sticking your arm deep into a cow’s backside, getting up to your elbows in warm and gooey bovine innards. digg_url ="http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/11/haptic-cow/"; But for new vet students, there’s no avoiding the procedure: To diagnose pregnancy or check for infection, you’ve got to reach […]

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Designed to scan the heavens thousands to billions of light-years beyond the solar system, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has now recorded some more down-to-Earth signals. During its first 14 months of operation, the flying observatory has detected 17 gamma-ray flashes associated with terrestrial lightning storms. The flashes occurred […]

  • Close Encounter with Saturn Moon’s Fantastic Plumage November 6, 2009
Earlier this week, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft took its deepest dive ever through the center of the icy plume shooting out from the southern pole of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. NASA reports that the spacecraft survived Monday’s flyby in good health, and is now transmitting eagerly awaited data and images back to Earth. At its closest point, Cass […]

  • Out of the Blue: Islands Seen From Space November 6, 2009
    > Islands are some of the most beautiful, peaceful, violent, desolate and unique places on Earth. While experiencing a tropical island from its sandy beaches, or a volcanic island from its towering peaks is wonderful, experiencing them from above [...]
