Kumari Punished for Promoting Harmony

Last week or so, I wrote about a 10-year-old Kumari’s visit to US. However the first Kumari to visit overseas to EDUCATE people about harmonious relationship between Buddhism and Hinduism has been fired from her post as a Kumari. Her title was stripped “because she traveled overseas to promote a documentary about the centuries-old tradition.”
This is an outrageous step by the authorities. In addition to the fact that her visit has inspired a lot of American children, she has also inspired many Nepali children and adults who have been removed from home. She inspired Nepali children in US and in the world to learn about our own culture. This weekend, I had an opportunity to moderate a forum at the Association of Nepalis in the Americas (ANA) Convention held in Los Angeles where we discussed the Kumari’s visit to the US. Everyone, including the children were listening with tremendous interest. It is heartbreaking that she has been punished for promoting Nepali culture. Nepali authorities are well known for their stupidity and carelessness. This one tops the charts.
