Modern Human Have Less Genetic Variation: Really?

According to the July Issue of Royal Society Biology Issues, modern Britons have less genetic variation than their ancestors. While comparing mtDNA of ancient Britons with modern Europeans (including the Brits) and the Middle Easterners it was found that “the historical sample shows greater genetic diversity than for modern England and other modern populations, indicating the loss of diversity over the last millennium.”

This sounds surprising specially because I thought the 21st century world has so much admixture but apparently we are lagging behind our ancestors in terms of genetic diversity. Of course, the lack of diversity may be unique to the Brits or may be there is ascertainment biases in sample collection?
